From what I can tell, and from what I read on this site, there are only two choices, and from what I understand there doesn't seem much difference. Is there any other political parties in the US that could challenge the balance of power of the repubs or demos?

When I say there doesn't seem to be much difference I am referring to the fact that your congress seems to vote for or against the same issue irrespective of their political affiliation.
I'm sure that there are huge fundamental differences betweem them.

There have been third party candidates who have run for president such as Ross Perot and Ralph Nader but they were at a disadvantage without the party support of the Democrats and Republicans. There are actual several parties in the USA but none close to being as strong as the Republicans and Democrats.

Not in the Houses or the Executive Branches.
Third parties are usually spoilers in these races.
People want to vote for the winner. Spoilers don't win.
