You can use a USB cable for transfering data. Have to set up software on both sides.
You can also use USB flask drive, or burn CD (DVD) on one computer and read it on the other.
You can also network the two computer. (one way is to connect the two RJ45 connectors by a cross over cable), and select 'share drive) for the drive containing the the data to be transfered.

I would use an Ethernet cable between the two PCs
firstly connect at back via the single connection Ethernet port then enable windows file sharing on both PCs there is a file transfer wizard with both operating systems, who will make this process easier.
Alternatively you can drag your documents pictures across by simply dragging and dropping into the xp machine.
However you can use the 98 Hard drive either as an external hard rive but requires you to buy some hardware,or put it into xp machine as slave hard drive, but only if you feel confident !!.

Good luck

Remove the hard disk from the Windows 98 machine
Plug the hard disk into the Windows XP machine
Import the disk via Disk Management (right-click My Computer and select Manage) giving it a drive letter
Copy data from the newly imported drive to your XP drive
Remove the disk and put it back in your Windows 98 machine

This is the quickest and easiest method when dealing with large amounts of data with no network in place (so long as you are comfortable with the basics of computer innards - like knowing what a hard drive looks like and how to plug it in)

The easiest way to transfer large amounts of data between 2 PC's is by using a USB pen drive (or some MP3 Players, such as iPod will work as a pen drive, and also digital cameras that operate as a removable drive (they appear in My Computer)).

There are other options such as cabled and wireless networking [by far the fastest method, these devices can be internal or external (they plug into the USB port), bluetooth adapters (USB port connection) etc.

However, if you are reasonably advanced with computers and are confident to take them apart, you can put the Windows98 hard disk drive [HDD] into your XP PC (provided they are both compatible formats, ie IDE, SATA etc). The WinXP machine can read older HDD's such as Win98, but Win98 can not read WinXP HDD [if it has been formated as a NTFS].

I hope this helps.

It depends what you mean by large amounts of data, if it's less than 20 gig then you can put it on a few DVD's. If it's a really large amount e.g. 100 gig, then an external hard drive is the ticket.

You could network the two PC's but transferring data could be slow, especially if there is tons of it.

Connecting them with a serial cable can be done but I am not sure of the network compatability between 98 and XP. Just use XP's network setup wizard and a serial cable and you should be able to get it to work fine.

I would use a cd or dvd burner and put information onto discs to move data from one machine to another.

Either across your local network (make a shared folder on one machine) or using an external usb hard drive. You could just use a crossover cable between the network cards in each machine, or you could connect regular CAT5 cables to your switch/router.

Plugging a USB cable into each machine wouldn't do anything, you'd need special software to support that.
