seven years old is waaaaaaaay to young to be watching the Lord of the Rings movies, or reading the books. Wait until she's at LEAST 11 or 12. 14 or 15 would be more like it. These are not books (or movies) to be taken lightly. You have to be adult enought to appriciate them not just as a fantasy story, but as an incredible example of authoring talant, and able to realize the awsome life lessons they have to teach. These are books about heroism, sacrifice, and honor. A child does not have a good enough grasp of these things to properly appriciate the Lord of the Rings.
A last note, the books should ALWAYS be read first. Watching the movies, which are corupted if beautifully done versions of the story, will only detract from the 'punch' of Tolkien's knock-you-flat writing talants, since you already know how it all ends.
(as a last note, the order of the books and movies is "The Fellowship of the Ring", "The Two Towers", and "The Return of the King". )

I read the book when i was 11 years old at school after reading The Hobbit which is the prequel to The Lord of the Rings. The first film has a certificate of PG and the other 2 have a certificate of 12. So really it is up to you whether you let your daughter watch them, talk it over with her first and try to explain about content of the films to her,

Well I can only say for Australia the rating is M15+ mainly because of violence. However, my daughter first watched Lord of The Rings when she was 7 and she was fine with it. I think it's got more to do with if the child is comfortable watching it then it's fine, but I'd recommend parental supervision for some of the more gorrier parts like beheading. The order is Lord of The Rings The Fellowship of the Ring, Lord of The Rings Two Towers, Lord of The Rings Return of the King.

I was 10 when i read the book and i felt in love in the trilogy. I think seven years old is too young for the book, but should be fine for the movie. 1) The Fellowship of The Ring, 2) Two Towers, 3) Return of The King x

For a 7 year old you could always read the books to her at night to let her use her own imagination of the decriptions? They are long so it would be a fair old committment to do this. Personally regardless of the age certificate of the film I would watch them first before your daughter as there is violence etc. As an adult I didn't like it because of the whole barbarian nature of the story (that's not a criticism just my taste) so it would be worth checking them out first. Also they are long films, just a warning!

i'd say when they are about 9 and 10. You must watch the fellowship first of all to get the story then right after it watch the two towers while it is fresh in your mind and then finish it when the return of the king and that will complete your experience. By the way you MUST watch the directors cut version of all three films as that is how they were intended to be seen and it has a lot of extra scenes that are paramount to the story itself

It depends on the child really. My son first watched it two years ago when he was 7 and he was fine with it, whereas my daughter who is 2 years older than him, hated it (two years ago when she was 9) because she didn't like all the killing in it, but she's fine with it now. It's up to you to the parents to excercise better judgment. Possibly start with the first one as it's the least scary and take your cue from there. If the child can handle watching Harry Potter and The Mummy then he/she should be able to handle watching LOTR.

7 is to young to read the book, it is very heavy! Trust me.
Let her watch the first movie (the Fellowship of the Ring) and see how she fairs. If she's bored or fidgets than maybe wait a few years. (10 is perfect)
Also, encourage her to read The Hobbit first, that way she'll know where Bilbo got the Ring from, and who Gollum is.

The order is: Fellowship, Two Towers, Return of the King.
I would say 7 is a little young, unless she is a very grown up little girl. Some of the fantasy violence is pretty scary, but having said that, it ends well. The best bet would be for you to see it yourself and make a call. You know her best after all (And you should definitely see them ;)

I would say maybe 11 or 12. There is some violence, but it's not disturbing. Point is it has very good acting and the story is fab. Also it has very good moral value to true life situations.
Fellowship of the ring, the two towers and the return of the king.
