It is named after Demetrius Ypsilanti, a hero in the Greek war for independence.

while they are both right so i'll only add -- it's also called Ypsi-tucky. in honour of those that came from kentucy and surrounding areas for the jobs at willow run when it opened.

CB is right (I looked it up)... a derivative of that is "Ypsi", what us locals call it.
