when they can afford to pay for their own bill.

children do not need to have the trappings of adulthood and do not need cellphones -- they need babysitters when parents arent home not phones to call mommy when they get home from school and are left all alone

My son is 8 years old and last year he started a new school alone (he used to be in the same school as his older sister) and he now rides a school bus. Normally my oldest daughter is home before he is but one day last year she got stuck in school a little longer than usual and my son had forgotten his key, which I had given him for this exact reason. My husband and I went out and bought him a firefly cell phone. It is a prepaid plan and it allows us to program up to 20 numbers into his phone and these are the only people that he can call or receive calls from and he knows to use it to call either of us or his sisters if he is ever in a situation like that again. Luckily, we live in a decent neighborhood and one of my neighbors saw him sitting on the steps and she took him down the street to her house and they called me from there. But in this day and age not everyone is that lucky. By the way my daughters are 14 and 16 both have jobs and bothpy their own cellphone bills. Again in this day and age I believe that it is important for a child to have a way to contact their parents in case of an emergency.A friend of mine has a daughter who was hit by a car on the way from school (a car skipped the pavement injurying her and another young lady and her having a cellphone allowed an adult to call her parents immediately to tell her what had happened even before medics arrived. Also look at the school shottings that are happening, it is an excellent way to keep in touch with your child should the need arrive. Parents should think about this, if you can afford it I think it is worth the peace of mind that they provide. Even if it is a prepaid plan with the understanding that it is only for emergency.

Having a cellphone for your kid nowadays is not just a fad but a necessity. You can keep track of his/her whereabouts through the locator service of the mobile network. This keeps me more comfortable and at peace when I know where my child is. My daughter had her first cellphone when she was just nine years old.

Age is not a factor for me. My kids will only get a cell phone if I think they need it to maintain contact w/ me. Right now, they do not. My kids are 12 and 13 and my son is in highschool. He would love to have a cell phone simply because the other kids have them. He will get one only if I determine that it is necessary and not because it is a part of some fad or status symbol.
