You just say no thank you, I am happy with my purchase and don't require anything else, I find it really irritating when shop assistants try to sell you another of their products or worse still when they try to push their store card at you to try and have you sign up for one then look at you like you have two heads because you say you would rather not, I have got very rude with some of those type of pushy people at times, I have got to the point were I tell them before I purchase anything that if I require any additional items I will buy them, but on this occasion I don't want the hassle.

The sales people are just doing their job. It is called suggestive selling and it helps increase the profits of the store. If it is something you are not interested in just be polite and say so, if you are interested you can listen to what they are telling you and then make a decision. Sometimes it will be a related item or sometimes an upgrade of the item you want. Please remember that these people are just doing their job and be polite.

Are you talking add on sales? Sometimes those are helpful. I'd hate to buy a digital camera and take it home to find out that it doesn't include the batteries. If you're talking about being redirected from one product to another, I usually tell them exactly what I am shopping for and what are my concerns (money, quality, both).

With your washing machine examlpe they often try to sell insurance. This is normally very bad value for money because normal consumer rights will cover you if it fails in the first year anyway.

They all do it - buy a pair of shoes - "would you like the leather cream polish with that sir?", buy a washing machine - "would you like the extended gold star platinum plated warranty for just another £85.99?"
Just say "No, thank you very much"

When I bought my vibrator from Ann Summers they practically forced me to buy Buzz Fresh Wipes for it and batteries!
I was too embarrassed to say no, I just wanted it put in the bag ASAP!

Politely refuse. If they persist, walk out without the sale taking place.

they will say things like 'we have the trousers that go with that' and other sneaky litle things
