my son is 4 and asks this question all the time , we were in the city the other day and he saw a tramp getting moved on by the police and this really upset him, he couldnt understand why he didnt have a home to live in, and for the past 4 days he keeps bringing this up. My son even went to his room and brought down some old toys and a blanket to give to the ' nice man'. Just be happy in knowing that you havent raised a self centred brat .. well done you xx

wow a very bright 3 year old indeed. I believe if any child asks an intelligent question then he should always be given a truthful answer, so bearing in mind his age, but the fact that he has seen the news and even more so taken it on board, i would tell him, 'in some parts of the world, some people r not as lucky as we r, the rains sometimes dont come to water the ground and crops, so therefore things cant grow, and so the children dont get enuf food' I certainly wouldn't go further than that at the age of 3, i wouldn't want him to know about civil wars etc. Try and limit him watching too much news, after all we dont see much positive of nice things do we? When he is older he can watch and know all this. Let a 3 year old watch lovely nice things. Plenty of time for him to learn what the real world is like.

Aww, what a lovely caring child you have, I guess the best way to explain that to a 3 year old is in a way a 3 year old would understand it.

That is a very good question, how do you explain something like that in way that a 3 year old will understand.

Perhaps, "They will unless we each do our share to....(conserve), (donate to charities), (Pray to our God), fill in with what you feel might help save a starving person.
He's too young, but there would be absolutely NO starvation in the western democratic countries were it not for alcohol, drugs, and allowing mentally incompetent people to making decisions that they are not capable of making (the taking of their meds, seeking shelter, etc.).

because they ate yesterday, and might eat tommorow.
only in the civilised (hah!) world do we expect to eat every day. you can only eat if you have the money to buy food or you are dependent on handouts and charity.
mum would often go hungry to make sure her children were well nourished and had the chance to grow up strong and healthy. dad worked hard, and he needed to eat...
now everything has changed. we dont so manual labour in fields and factory, and we eat so much we are an obese nation. we eat the wrong food, and our bodies get fat and bloated thru our greed.

Best thing to do is take him to a country to witness why there are starving children, then you don't have to tell him anything. He will see for himself and fell hungry with them.
That should stop him asking similar awkward questions of you.

The reason for most famines and starvation is that there are wars that keep farmers from being able to plant their fields. So they can't grow any food, so people starve.
USAID says that most humanitarian crises are caused by humans, rather than by mother nature.

Because some little boys live in better places and others have better parents who love them very much. You have both.
