Well a majority of the artist's sound come's from the fingers. However, to achieve a Mark Knopfler tone, a Fender amp with Reverb built in would be the best place to start.

Mark Knopfler's work is mainly clean heading into very mild overdrive/crunch. He has used many amps in his career, but for the most control you should think about looking at a Fender amp and a Stratocaster (Or at least a guitar with single coil pickups).

Best of luck with achieving the tone your after!!

His Sultans Of Swing "sound" is a Fender Stratocaster guitar set between pickups, just like Eric Claptons Lay Down Sally. Its clean, no effects. Any amp will work.

You already have the right answers above - just a note to say that finger dexterity and clean picking are a must. Some of MK's solos are virtually impossible to play well with pick / pick and fingers, I'd go fingers all the way for the real feel.

No, you need a National.

They look great anyway so why wait

Or if your thinking of the solos with a strat, you just need to pick the notes with your fingers with your pickup selector in the "second from the left" setting.
