It's called "Wren's Day" or "Wrans Day" in many parts of Ireland.

Local people dress in straw 'rigs' or other disguises and do three rounds of the town following a fife and drum band and hobby horse.

It's better than Christmas day - the day starts with the first round at 6am, and the kids look forward to hearing the band more than they look forward to Santa, almost!

Christmas afternoon is spent getting the 'rig' ready, and woe betide you if you're not on the wran! Each section of town has it's own wran, and there's fierce (but friendly) competition among them.

The second round starts after noon, and involves many stops in many pubs for refreshment!!!

The last round is late evening, and money is collected from all the houses for charity and the Wran Ball, and finally finishes with a big 'hooley'!

A great day, much better than hanging round nursing hangover and watching the same old stuff on tv!
