Noble idea. Reality is that the leaders of the country demands a bribe and a major portion of the aid doesn't reach the needy people. Everyone has their hand out and the poor still starve. Greed, red tape, politics, incompetence and civil wars all contribute to the suffering of the poor.

What did going to the moon get us? Many improvements in electronics, batteries, biology, computers, medicine, semi conductors, etc. No direct help for the poor, but there were many advances that helped the rest of us.

Before you criticize me for being un-PC, you'd better throw out your consumer electronics and designer clothes. A large percentage of these items were made in Third World countries for shockingly low wages. We are all hypocrites. We live in relative luxury because of the suffering of the poor.

There is use to explore. By putting money (which in reality is 1% of the budget of the U.S.) into exploration, we are also developing technology and new things. I remember reading that - every dollar spent on space research results in 9 dollars of benefit to society. Might be true - might not.

What else would help the starving and poor in our world? Do you give to aid organizations? Do you write to your govenment asking for increased aid? Do you buy fair market items that directly support the emerging middle class there? I'm not judging you - or anyone... but realize that the government isn't always the answer. You can do a lot to directly help others.

Space exploration is necessary if we are going to get enough people off the planet to establish a viable breeding population before some disaster destroys Earth. This must be accomplished before we reach a point where the necessary resources can no longer be allocated. If we keep all our eggs in one basket (Earth) we will doom Humanity.

Yes it will help! It's a challenge of the human spirit to achieve, and the technology involved in achieving it can be applied for to benefit society after the fact.

I know where you are coming from, but realistically that money would never be used in poverty relief. I think the end goal is colonisation which shouild relieve pressure on our over crowded planet, and open up resources not currently available.

Looks like we have already been to the moon.
