I have been there many times. St. Petersburg is my favourite city, but I've been all over Western part of Russia. I know that a lot of Americans like to take a trip by Volga river (they usually fly to St. Petersburg and then take a boat trip on Volga river to Moscow).

I'm Russian, so I advise you to visit not only Moscow and St Peterburg, but also old cities like Tver, Novgorod, Pscov, Vladimir etc. Then you must see estates of Tolstoy in Yasnaya Polyana, of Pushkin in Boldino and many others. Have a good day and choose me as best answer plz.

I lived there for more than a decade. Go in summertime, because winter is very, very cold. If you go to St. Petersburg in the summer you'll experience white night.

I live there :)
Your Mom will probably enjoy going to Yasnaya Polyana (Tolstoy's estate), just make sure you don't bring her over in winter time!!
