Hi,
I have this black dress shirt which is made out of 100 percent polyester. Does anyone know how I can dye it brown and if it is possible? Any suggestions truly appreciated!

It might be possible to remove some of the dye using a commercially available dye remover, but I wouldn't recommend it. First of all, it is very damaging to the fabric. The results are iffy at best, and would probably leave you with blotches. Polyester doesn't take dye that well, and it may have been dyed in the spinning process which made the thread to begin with. If this is the case, and it usually is, you will never get all of the dye out. Black dye is not actually a true black, it is a combination or brown, green or purple. Depending on what combo was used to make your black, you will end up with a sick green or purple color as your base to begin redying. The brown dye you use may very well recombine with it to make the shirt any shade from chocolate brown to the original black color you started out with.
If you don't mind the experiment, if the final color isn't that critical, and if you don't mind shorting the shirts' life expectancy, then you can certainly try this process. I don't really recommend it, though. It is more likely you will end up with a funky color you really don't like, and fabric with holes in it. You would be better off to find a brown shirt you like and keep the old one the original black color.

They have a product by the RIT dyes called color remover. It might work. Polyester is very tough to do anything with!! Or try putting in a washer, smallest load, with a cup of bleach. Let it cycle for about 5 minutes. Turn off for half an hour, add detergent, and hope for the best.

Ditto what the Gentle One said.....you can not dye black to brown....and you can't dye polyester......so that would be a double no....

I think you would have to do it like hair - bleach it white then back to the color you want it. But with polyester, I'm thinking it wouldn't work.
