Where do you draw the line between "to go" and "fast food?" Might sound stupid but think about it: One person is used to simply ringing up items and one used to writing something down before wringing it up and walking a few more feet. OK, maybe I broke it down to the extremes....

Anyhow, as a personal rule for take out, if it is under $10, a $1 tip. If $10-$20, a $2 tip and so on. I guess I feel bad for taking the server away from his/her tip making duties elsewhere.

So yeah, I guess 10% or there abouts is my norm for to go (still about 15%-20% for delivery though, they earned it a bit more).

No tip is required. TIPS from the beginning of food service for folks that didn't or couldn't cook at home meant, To Insure Prompt Service. One would add a 5% or so for the delivery person. Now it is proper to tip 20% in a nice restaurant, and if it is a 'togo' thing, a 10% is ok. Thanks for asking, I've been in the business for 50 years now, and tipping seems to still be a mistery. I, personally, tip the 'Circle K' clerks a buck everytime I buy a 6 pack of beer. It's just me, but I never have to stand in line very long. lol. Ron

YES! You ARE supposed to tip them. They do not earn much hourly, and they do work for tips (similar to servers). If you have a small order (1-2 items), a dollar or two is fine. If you have a medium sized order (3-6 items), three to five dollars is good. And if you have a large order (more than 6 items), it is good to tip five dollars or more. And if you are ordering a whole lot (say for a party or a big group of people), you should probably tip ten dollars or so.

A tip is not mandatory unless you have a large group. As far as the amount...same as any restaurant 15%, 20% if the waiter was really good - and nothing if they were terrible.

No! At a restaurant you tip for the service not just the food, as you didnt really ( I presume) receive any service from a waitress then you do not have to tip!

Yes .. I do a smaller tip then an actual server, usually the 10% range instead of the server range of 20%, but these togo people get your order ready, bagged and checked ..

not always.. look for you receipt because service charge is indicated there if it is included then no need for a tip but if you are generous enough and you've experienced a good service from the crew then why not give them..=) by the way, it is a rule to give 15% tip of your total bill for the service you rendered.

Idea behind tip is "a Living Being feels satisfied after a good dinner/meal" ...so to share the happyness we give tip to the ne who served.....!

the legal answer is...no.

however, it is customary to do so because someone took the time to take your order and package it up for you. normally, there is not one dedicated person handling to go orders for customers so that means a waiter/waitress added it to their duties.

if they just hand me the bags, i give them a little for the little trouble they took on. if they go above and beyond by explaining all the packages, asking me if i need anything else, etc, then i give a little more.

Yes. Tip well if you plan to return. They will then hook you up. People that work in this business NEVER forget a good tip....or a bad one.
