The thong is probably the earliest form of clothing known to man; having originated in the warmer climates of sub-Saharan Africa where clothing was first worn nearly 75,000 years ago. Many tribal peoples, such as some of the Khoisan people of southern Africa, wore thongs for many centuries. Much like the 2000+ year old Japanese Fundoshi, these early garments were made with the male genitalia in mind.

Although developed for the male anatomy by primitive peoples, in the modern world Thongs have been worn for decades in recent years by female exotic dancers.

there are 2 types of thongs. G-string which is underwear and the thong sandal (flip flop). The G-string originated in Africa and the thong sandal is anyones guess but it could be referred to the national shoe of Australia as most of us wear them.

I think they were Japanese originally but Australians took to them like their own. We wear them everywhere. We even get married in them.

They have become a National Icon. First they were just rubber but now you can get all styles. And they are cheap the most expensive is only about $10. I believe the ones we pay about $3.00 for retail for about $100 in America. Talk about getting ripped off for cheap rubber footwear because Tommy Hilfinger put his tag on them.

My Granddaughter just came back from New York with a pair of TH's. They cost her father $60. My daughter has exactly the same pair, down to the little flower which she brought for $4 at Target. The grand daughter was really pissed off. ;-)

Oh, you mean knickers. ;-)

I believe they were the Brazilians. The "Tanga."

Did you know that Australians call flip flops thongs (the ones that have the strap going in between the toes? I heard an Aussie coworker say that he loves wearing thongs to work...he meant slippers....I HOPE :)
