How many programs have you got running in your system tray?(where the clock is) Do they really need to be there? Because each little program running there is slowing down your computer as they all need space to run. It takes just as long to start these programs from scratch as it does from the system tray so get as many off without using msconfig as you can. Go into the preferences of each program and find the 'Show icon in system tray' and untick it. Just leave the antivirus and safely remove hardware icons and time and volume, that's all you need. Check in PROGRAMS>STARTUP, unless you have a calendar on your desktop, nothing else should be on there so remove them by right clicking and delete, it wont delete the program but it will stop them from starting up when you start your computer.
Disk cleanup and defrag when you're done. Things should be much faster by then. Only use msconfig when all else fails, it is a good tool but too frequently used for something that could be altered inside the actual program you wish to stop.

what sort of computer do you have? Mac is very simple you just quit anything running (shown by a little arrow under the icon on the dashboard- or press ctrl Q) The biggest problems are programs that download automatically- like limewire.

Start with the basic maintainence on your system before downloading third party software.
this simple guide will assit you
http://www.pctechguide.com/tutorials/hdd...
Make sure your windows updates are uptodate, and also your
anti-virus is updated and run a full scan of your system.
Tune up your start up files (faster loading system)
Go to Start>Run and in the Run dialog box type in 'msconfig' and hit Enter.
System Configuration Utility will pop up choose the Startup tab.
Click on that tab and you will see the list of what runs at startup.
Use this site to determine whats safe to uncheck
type in search box exactly how it appears in msconfig start up
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php.....
and keep it on your favorites for future ref as when you install new software and downloads check msconfig again to make sure no more items have been added to start up.
Good luck, its time consuming, but gets easier if you run things regularly.

good apart from all these softwares and other checks
goto add/remove programs in control panel and uninstall the ones you do not use.
do a clean boot
visit support.microsoft.com and search for clean boot and you will get an article as how to do it.
this will increase the performance.
