The particular benefit of fish oil (either from consuming fish or taking concentrated oil capsules) is the presence of Omega-3 fatty acids.
Omega-3's (unlike Omega-6 or 9's) work on a biochemical pathway that reduces inflammation. Because so much of our food today enhances inflammation, there is evidence that many of our ailments like heart disease come from an overactive inflammatory response in the body.
Omega-3's can be obtained from fish oil or from certain other natural sources like flax seed or walnuts. Any health food store can supply you with good concentrated sources of EPA and DHA (subsets of Omega-3's). The more the merrier.
Don't get sucked in by the Omega-6 or 9 supplements, you get all of those you need from MacDonalds.
Also, you tend to get what you pay for. The more expensive the Omega-3 supplement, the better the filtering, and the less potential toxins.

Fish oil contains the omega-3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which reduce inflammation throughout the body. Some experts believe that taking fish oil (in any form) can help regulate cholesterol in the body. Recent studies have suggested that fish oil may affect depression and suicide risk. The American Heart Association recommends the consumption of 1g of fish oil daily, preferably by eating fish, for patients with coronary heart disease. From what I've heard, they're supposed to be good for your eyes and hair as well.
