Well, in law the role of equity is primarily to ensure a fair and just outcome to any dispute. I think you need to refer to the maxims of equity that explain to you the meaning of equity and what it stands for.
For example,
Equity is equal before the law.
Equity will not assist a volunteer.
He who comes to equity must do so with clean hands.
There are a lot more but these three show generally how equity is viewed and followed in the courts.
It is a very complicated area of law.

in the insurance buisness and pentions equity is the capital you garentee you have to pay the customer !
a ne equity company can go bust with no cash and nobody is payed there pentions ! ( merdoc ?)
equity is the amount of cash a person is worth including house car etc job role = lend amount same in corperations
