It's all somewhat relative, I think. How do you define an indulgence these days?

However, as F. Scott Fitzgerald said, "The rich are different than you and me". To which Hemmingway said, "Yes, they have more money."

All this is to indicate that wealthy people can buy their way out of problems and into social circles that most people can't.

Donate enough money to a Presidential campaign and you can meet the President. Donate even more , but spread it around in Congressional races, and you can get legislation passed that favors your business or special interest.

Seriously- it is a reported fact that lobbyists have written parts of bills introduced in the US Congress. The senators and representatives just said they were glad for the outside free help because their staffs were so overworked.

I don't think the various lobbyists just kindly volunteer their free time because they want to help the democratic process.

If all this crap goes on here, I am surprised that it is even news that there is corruption in other governments, such as in Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.

I think of an 'indulgence' as things more like wine, cognac, pornography, cigarettes, cigars, HD TVs, and so forth.

Life insurance.

When I die, how many years do I get back?
