You are sweet to worry about his feelings, but it was a car accident. And you were hurt. Just tell him, and Im sure you won't do it in such a way as to make him feel guilty on purpose. But honestly, it may do him good to feel a little bad (I mean, he hurt his friend - a normal person would feel bad). Maybe it will be a good reminder for him to be careful on the road.

no because in the future he may say something in regards to the accident such as "Thank goodness no one was hurt" and you will feel an urge that you'll have to surpress--to a best friend. Or he could be in a bad situation on the road where he reacts badly and it causes you to overreact. In any case, if you were hurt, I'm sure he would want to know. If he feels bad just explain to him you didn't intend to make him feel guilty.

You definitely should tactfully tell him the accident was his fault, because it could have been much worse.. That way he can become more aware of his driving skills and more observant of his surroundings. I was always taught that you have to drive for yourself and the people on the road with you. I think not telling him the truth is a disservice to your relationship with him !!
