If you plan on download episodes regularly you should check this site http://www.FavoriteTVshow.com They have a small sign up fee but it is a one time thing and after this you get unlimited access to old and new episodes of shows including full series.

Yes, you can now sometimes watch episodes on the net (streamed, not for 'download' to keep) from the broadcasters website, such as NBC, BBC etc. This might be subject to country restrictions though based on your IP address which will prevent anyone outside the UK watching BBC programmes from their website for example.
Other illegitimate sources would be file sharing networks such as Limewire, eMule (still alive and kicking) or BitTorrent - using such sites as thepiratebay.com or mininova.org
Using a file sharing network, you will be able to download and keep video files which might have been recorded from a high-definition source and have their commercial adverts edited out.

I watched Heroes on tv tonight. At the end it said go the the station to watch missed episodes.. I can't remember if it was abc, or nbc???

At in2tv.com you can watch old shows.
At brilliantbutcancelled.com you can watch a couple cancelled shows.
