This November I think like 5 states are going to vote on whether or not to ban gay marriage and civil unions. My question is why.
Why do we need to vote on the rights of a whole group of people? Shouldn't this just be automatic?
Canada did not have a vote on gay marriage. They realized that thier constitution gave equal rights to all citizens and that was enough for them to say that homosexuals had the right to marry as well.
How come in the United States we need to get the approval of the majority to give homosexuals their equal rights?

Hey, you live in the US.

Do you think you live in the land of freedom like Canada or France?

If it's one thing the United States seems to fear, it's change. Change of the old 'status quo'. The rich keep getting richer, the poor, well, you know the story there. Marriage was recognized all these many centuries as a union of male/female. Or should I say publicly accepted. What has not been seen or aired so openly is the fact that not all couples that are meant to be together happens to BE like that. I'm not gay/lesbian. I AM a citizen of the U.S. and wonder as many do, why our freedom is disappearing. You CAN do this, you CANNOT do that - at least not anymore. Homosexuals as a loving family unit, married and with the benefits of such a union, is a great thing. Isn't it how we're taught and treated, with respect and love, that teaches us how to treat and respect others? That's what matters - not that the couple is a mixed set. C'mon!

Marriage is a function of religion. Government intruded in this, against our Constitution, by creating licenses, taxes, special tax status for married couples, etc.

In the US, civil unions give the benefits of marriage and gay people can take advantage of that status. That is the 'equal civil rights' factor at work.

The issue with Marriage is that those who wish to uphold the First Amendment insist that Government should not be meddling in church affairs by forcing Churches to marry people against their own religious doctrine.

One more issue - Socialist / Communist governments turn the State into the ruling authority over society's belief systems and eliminate religious authority. The State assumes the role of master rather than servant of The People. This is anathema to the American concept that authority flows from God to The People then to the Public Servants. Socialists do not tolerate any higher authority than their Dictator, Fuhrer or whatever.

Americans interested in defending our form of government are therefore correct in fighting against Socialist-style takeover of religious affairs by Government.

Because we have idiots in office. Gay marriages are not for us the government, the people or religions to judge, this is Gods job.
We need to stay out of personal preferences and bring a little faith back into our government.
I saw a video on China the other day and they still have the flag and the pledge to their country in the classrooms. They go to school 6 days a week and from 6 to 6. We are really getting too involved in things that we have no business being in and instead of worrying about the next set of gay marriages, we should be worried about getting out of Iraq.
Just my opinion...sorry, didn't mean to go off, just sometimes I have to do it.

Being Canadian we left that up to our politicians to listen to their home ridings and vote as a democracy, we had town hall mettings to address averyones concerns. It is amazing how all people are equal when the government has their hand out and they want to collect their tax money, but when it comes to the intimate relationships that happen behind closed doors not everyone is the same.

Gay marriage is a critical issue and there must be a referendum whether or not this must be accepted or legalized.

Let the gays get marry civily but not by the church. I think the church should decide by itself without government intervention. But they shouldn't allow it.

Because small minded conservatives are terrified of gay people.
