When you start the installation, the first option you get is to Upgrade/ or to do a new install. You should see both the options displayed. And If you choose Upgrade, then it will replace your win98 installation to XP, retaining all previous programs and data on the hard disk. No problems in it.

Have somebody check the compatibility of your motherboard before you try to upgrade. Windows XP requires a powerful processor. You may have had a chip that was high powered for Windows 98 and which can support Windows XP -- if you have to ask this question, though, you need to get advice about this.

If you do upgrade, some of the programs that worked under Windows 98 may not work under Windows XP and you'll have to upgrade them. Some of those that ran under DOS (which Windows 98 supported) won't work at all and others will give unreliable results.

I'm a consultant with 12 years of experience working with all Microsoft Windows versions. 98 is based on technology that is VERY different from XP - Microsoft says you can upgrade, but in my experience - troubleshooting various people's problems with upgrades and doing more than a few myself, I've found you have a 50/50 chance of it working without issue. If it does seem to work, there's still a good chance you'll have weird, sporadic problems. So can you upgrade? YES. Should you upgrade? NO. Your safest thing to do is to backup your data and reformat your computer, then install XP and reinstall your programs.

Do you have xp compatible hardware?
Do you have xp compatible drivers for the hardware?

How much ram? What processor?

Just search out xp installation requirements and you should get a list of what is required.

Upgrading however isn't a good idea. I'd go for the full installation instead of an upgrade.

run ur windows 98. then place ur windows xp cd installer to ur cd drive. then follow the given instruction...just see to it u chose UPGRADE command in the installation menu. then follow the instructions.
there is no way ur system willl crash when u upgrade it to xp system. i assure u...unless your hardware is not compatible with xp or some of ur installed program. for sure it will cause u trouble.
but if u r having a hard time to upgrade it u better ask some assitance from somedoy who knows it.
