Most people who suffer with autism also have learning difficulties to some degree. Autism is a 'spectrum', whereby different people suffer different degrees of severity. Occasionally on one end of the spectrum, you see an unusually gifted individual, but this is the rarity.

Most have tremendous problems and it saddens me to see the flippant responses of some answers towards people with this problem.

Not really. Autism does not give you special gifts. If you are born autistic and you are born with an inclination to be "gifted" (ie: you are naturally good at math or good at art), then you will probably develop that skill greater than someone who is not autistic but is gifted in the same area. Because autism comes in a varying range of severity it really cannot be classified all the same. Some people with autism are very intellegent and gifted in many ways superior to "normal" individuals. However, there are some individuals with autism that cannot function at all in daily life. Autism has so many varying aspects that really it cannot be generalized to say that all people with autism are gifted.

No. But one characteristic of autism is a child that is hyperfocused on one topic. That may be something useful like computers or the workings of a watch - or the focus could be on port-o-potties! Also, the hypersensitivity can result in a child that can tell if you've changed your shampoo the moment you walk in the room.

AUTISM-brain disorder that begins in early childhood and persists throughout adulthood; affects three crucial areas of development: communication, social interaction, and creative or imaginative play.
So it may not be blessing and thus i never think its a gift.
Ya we find people having extraordinary skills affected by autism but then not in every case

Not all. It has been observed, though, that *some* autistic persons have various abilities...but one wouldn't really call it a gift. You should read up on some Oliver Sachs, his stuff really elucidates on that.
