Hi all. I'm looking for a particular type of jazz but I'm not sure what its called. Its more of an "atmosphere" than a specific type. The kind of thing you find flowing over film noirs or Chinatown style detective thrillers. Usually its very slow and involves a muted trumpet and accompanies a detective giving a broody voice over. Can someone please advise me on what this a) what this style is called, b) who the best artist to look out for in this style would be and c) a good album to get me started? Many Thanks.

Apologies for not explaining myself properly - I'm not looking for a vocal track - I'm looking for the type of music that gives the "seedy" atmosphere and would normally be associated with such detective films.

Just to reiterate, I'm looking for an album or an artist, not a record shop. I'm UK based so a US shop is of no help to me.

Christopher Komeda...aural tunes from jazz composer who did soundtracks for Roman Polanski films (Rosemary's Baby, etc.) In fact most jazz composers from Eastern Europe from the 50's onward would put you in good stead.
Funny, really, but the US crime programmes from the early seventies - Eastwood films, etc...even Kojak, and films relied a lot on jazz...Lalo Schifrin the main man, with Ennio Morricone, Lennie Niehaus and Jerry Fielding not too far behind.

The Guitar Artistry of Charlie Byrd.
George Shearing at Claremont College.
The Freshmen.
Satchmo.
You have them all in the U.S.A.
They are oldies but modern copies should be available but not with the same sound quality now everything has been reduced to binary. The world has gone mad and totally brainwashed these days. How people believe that measuring the rate of change measured on a developing curve is as accurate as the original curve, I don't know?
Good luck.

Although you are looking for somewhat of a vocal track, this goup had no vocals on this particular cd. The group called Metalwood was quite the soothing jazz sound I liked. Their self titled cd was great, and what caught my ears was that they even used a turntable scratch on two of the songs on that album.
