I'm an advocate of object-oriented programming (OOP). I personally also like the Java programming language, but I've had much experience in C/C++ in academia. Java has a lot of classes and libraries (why re-invent the wheel?) with reusable code as well as built-in or, at least, usable GUI (graphical user interface...like Visual Basic) tools/code.
You could probably download a free copy or otherwise get a hold of some old version of Visual Basic...from 1.0 to 6.0 (seeing as how Visual Basic .NET is the most recent version at the moment), and play around with it as Visual Basic code, especially older Visual Basic code, is less object-oriented and more "dummy friendly"...I dunno how else to describe it. Visual Basic's GUI is as easy as point-click-drag-and-drop. There must be a buttload of free examples and tutorials and downloadable code on the web for older versions of Visual Basic...not to mention for VB.NET as well...that would help you get started. The help file is also your friend.
A lot, if not all, of the professors at my university really advocate object-oriented programming (there's also an object-oriented design method called the Unified Process, but you mainly only need to know that if you want to go into software product design/engineering/marketing). There's more emphasis on classes, objects, organization, localization (as opposed to globalization), modularization, and logic (as opposed to a bunch of "goto's"). If you want to learn the right way, practice with an object-oriented programming language. I would personally suggest Java, but Java isn't your only option.

DOS is basis. make a game or a numerical algorithm in DOS.
Basic is good.
C,C+,C++,that's fun also, s p a c e and mistypes is bad code, we all make mistakes, code checking is a must.
Java is way fun for games charts plots anything
Ruby is the bestest, but learn all them cause ruby is still a little too fresh.
Linux is always good. all most every Game or Server or really money making machine runs on Linux or a deviant.
