"Main memory," as you refer to it, is what the Central Processor Unit (CPU) uses, as opposed to video memory, or hard disk memory or other storage memory.
The "main memory" chips are plugged directly into the motherboard, and is an integral part of the brain or main processing function of the computer.

It is the first place the computer stores its information while it is working. The processor is the brain, RAM is the memory and the disk drive is the filing cabinet.

Says who? RAM is Random Access Memory - it's what's used actively while running the computer - it's like your desktop workspace - your hard disk is like your bookshelves where you put all your programs while you wait to use them.
Another way to put it - RAM is SHORT TERM memory - Hard Disk storage is LONG TERM memory.

Ram is the area of memory where your programs are moved to when you run them! I.E. when you start a program, it is copied from rom and moved to ram to run.

its not RANDUM ACCESS you idiot, its RANDOM -
basically it is very fast and used as a placeholder for info you recently use - but since it is non-volatile (needs power) once you reboot , you lost the info
the other type of mem is ROM or read only - ROM is really never mentioned anymore - as RAM and CPU really are the 2 main aspects of speed
