I have extreme anxiety disorder and I don't want to go to a doctor. Every day I hope that I'll wake up and be able to live life to the fullest, but then I wake up and I feel scared and depressed and guilty about being alive and it ends up being just like every other day. I keep putting things off and thinking tomorrow will be the day that I finally start living. The Catholic school I went to really messed me up. I'm thinking about starting to take drugs or drinking so I can be less inhibited and enjoy life. I got brainwashed by the Catholics and even though I've renounced my Catholicism, too much damage has been done and I feel this overwhelming sense of guilt for being alive.

you seriously need to speak with a psychiatrist. it will be hard at first but it wont kill you. anxiety can be overcome, as well as phobias. you just gotta forced yourself when you're ready and do it. the longer you wait, the harder it will be. you can do it...just make yourself believe you can. and please dont resort to drugs or drinking for this

First step to solving a problem is admitting you have one. Do you have any kind of support system, such as a really close/good friend that can help you? Simply getting TO an appointment would be easier with someone to lean on a little. Take small steps at a time. Does where you live offer anything as old-fashioned as a 'housecall'?
Get used to getting back to what you know is out there; a more fulfilling life where you aren't afraid. Believe in yourself again. I know you can do this!!! And no to the drugs and/or alcohol. You don't need them. Best of luck.

Guilt at being alive? Guilt just for taking up air and water, a little food? You know, in your heart, that is nonsense. Plenty worse people than you take up space on this earth, and as long as they have a chance to improve into a worthwhile person, it is reasonable.

You have plenty of choices left. Today you had the courage to write this question and put it to the anonymous public what you feel and what they would recommend.

So, today, you recognize that you need the help of others to get yourself on track. Can you go one step further and reach out to someone in your immediate environment, someone who can physically touch you and help you? Is there anyone you think might, just might, want to? Why not make today the day you begin your quest for that person of compassion who can help you sort it all out and get yourself on track?

I understand about not wanting to go to a doctor. You get so you can predict what they will do: they will smile, pat you on the head (at least metaphorically) and give you a prescription. Perhaps they will refer you to a therapist of some sort. If you cannot see any hope in that course, why take it? There is only hope where you can see it.

You say the Catholics messed you up. Since I'm not a Catholic, or even a Christian, I do not feel compelled to defend them. But there are many other spiritual pathways, and you can seek for the one that suits you. People are different, and there are different ways to find a higher power who can lift you to a higher purpose, get you going on something you can believe in, have purpose in. My own path, sometimes called neo-pagan or Wicca, may not be for you. Perhaps the Buddhists or Hindus or Native Americans have something to offer you.

Perhaps you can find a spiritual development in the process of studying all different beliefs. There is something of great value in any religion, or it would not exist. A spiritual quest is necessarily a very personal one, but it seems the one thing I can offer you as a plan to pull yourself out of this hole.

Good luck, and God bless. (Oh yes, I believe in God. Any number of them, actually.)

If you don't want to go to a doctor is it fair to assume you have not yet been to one? In that case how can you know your problem is extreme anxiety disorder, where did you get that diagnosis? I can't see where the church would be responsible in any way for your feeling guilty to be alive but if you think blaming someone else helps have at it. You're thinking about drugs and alcohol while feeling depressed and guilty for just being alive? Not smart at all. You know all these problems are there, you know you need help but you would rather ask a bunch of unknown web surfers than a professional! I don't see how any of us can help you. Try that doctor you don't want to see or go ahead and continue the way you are. The choice is yours not ours.

Brainwashed by the Catholics, huh? So you probably think that everything you do is a sin? That being alive is a sin?

You are a beautiful person who deserves to be alive and happy. You deserve to have a beautiful human experience. Everything on this planet is a gift- including you. The grass, the trees, the food and water you eat, the air you breathe. Do you think you don't deserve to be happy and partake? Why? Why are you so bad? Are you worse than me? I don't think so. God doesn't judge so who cares what other people think. It is not a sin to be a human being, or to be happy, or to be alive. So partake joyfully in everything available to you. And don't feel guilty. Animals are given what they need and don't feel guilty. Why should you?

Alcohol and drugs are not the answer. What if you do somrthing stupid and make things worse? What if you need more and more?

You are in a lot of pain and need help. Muster your strength, you'll need it. You might be able to do it alone, but too much is at stake. An expert will have the skills to bring out the "you" you want to find again.

See a doctor.

#1 - quit blaming the church for your problems. Whether they are to blame or not doesn't matter at this point.
#2 - go to a shrink - it's amazing what the right medication can do for you
#3 - drinking and illegal drugs will make everything that is already bad worse.

You have to take the first step to get this in control and you can't do it alone, you've already tried. Been there, done that. Better now.

There are herbal supplements that can help with anxiety and depression that are safe and very effective. I would also recommend some meditation or hypnosis to learn to calm yourself. Don't give up!
