Bowling was popular first as a nine pin game. The Dutch passed bluenose laws against playing nine-pin on a Sunday. Ten pin worked out better anyway, all around.

It is called ten pin bowling because you have 10 pins to knock over with a bowling ball. It originated in Europe and taken across the pond to the US. However, this can be questioned as an archaeologist discovered in a Egyptian tomb, in 1930, some skittles and bowling balls. These are thought to date back to around 3200BC. Henry VIII banned his troops from playing bowling as he thought it would distract them from their archery practice.
