When the solar system was being formed there was a lot of dust and gases and stuff floating around in space. Because of the effect of gravity all the matter started to clump. The center of this clump consisting of mostly light gases formed the sun, at the same time gravity was still pulling on the remaining stuff in space. As matter was being pulled by gravity all the motion of the molecules started to get in the way of each other and all the molecules would run into each other. Well this just couldn't last and one particular direction eventually won out. This direction is is the plane of the solar system. The sun rotates in this plane. The planets were starting to clump too. Again it is gravity's little trick to form planets. Since the materials that were in the plane is the same materials the planets were made from. They too have the same direction of movement.

Actually they don't revolve in exactly the same plane. The orbits of each planet are slightly tilted with respect to each other. Pluto's orbit is tilted more than most which was one reason it's status was changed. Even if some planets did have orbits in very different planes early on, the gravitational forces of the larger ones would drag the smaller ones into more or less the same plane over time.

The solar system was formed by a Nebula that became gravitationally unstable as a result of some other event like a collapsing star close by. As the Nebula began to collapse, it began to spiral towards the main collection of material in the center similar to water going down a drain. The gravitational drain became the Sun. As other gases and dust clumped together and picked up speed, they became the planets with enough mass and momentum to avoid being sucked down the drain into the Sun and remain in orbit. The Sun, like the earth, is slightly larger around its equator due to the centrifugal force of its rotation. It would naturally be closer to the planets at its equator and its gravitational force keeps the planets stabilized in the same plane. The Milky Way and other galaxies operate in the same way as they rotate around a strong gravitational, or vacuum force, whatever your theory, at the center.
