Talc (a powdered rock) has been shown to cause respiratory problems, and is a possible carcinogen.

Cornstarch (from a plant) hasn't been linked to respiratory problems, isn't a carcinogen, and is as effective as talc.

In fact, most people can't tell cornstarch from talcum powder.

So why use talc?

(My grandmother taught me over thirty years ago to use cornstarch for my powder. We'd buy it in the grocery section, not in the baby section. I have a friend who made scented powders for gifts by adding essential oils and packing it in a pretty box with a powder puff.)

And I can tell you from first hand experience that cornstarch is GREAT for getting rid of diaper rash. =D

I use nothing. With diapers the way they are these days you really don't need any additional items (unless a bit of redness shows up, due to diarea or teething etc.). Then I use destin, it works great, clears it up in a few diaper changes. Anyway, when my boy was 1 month old he got ulcers on his bottom (he was preemie) and I need to use the powder, my ped. recommended the cornstarch (she said the talc was not good for his lungs). But, she also cautioned that you need to be careful with the cornstarch because it has natural yeast in it, so you have to be extra careful to watch for yeast infections etc. Especially in little girls. I hope this helped.

I've never heard about using cornstarch for babies rear-end although I have read never to use talc powder. We have a special cream to prevent diaper rash which I use at night, otherwise she doesnt have a problem with it thankfully.
I had a nurse tell me to add cornstarch to my daughter's bath to help reduce her skin reaction to the hard water so I use it during bathtime and it really does help.

Cornstarch. It works so much better and it feels better on their little tushes. I was always told that the Talc is linked to cervical cancer. I have 3 girls so I always used cornstarch.

I used cornstarch. I don't know what's all in talc, but I used corn starch because I knew for sure that it didn't have any fragrances to it or anything that would break my baby's skin out.

Cornstarch is fine to use but if there is a rash you should discontinue until you know what kind of rash it is. Rashes that are candida or fungus will thrive on cornstarch.
