sickle is a type of scythe. sickle is a hand held tool whereas the scythe is longer and has a bigger blade. I carry both. the scythe is for the usually "harvesting" of souls. The smaller one I keep under me cloak and use when those foolish souls try and outrun me and I need to put them beeyatches in their place and make the reaping a bit more.......personal. SO, one is bigger, the other is smaller. but all that really matters is the final result. The smaller one is much more fun to use since you get to see their eyes when you "harvest" them. Kind of cool....

Sickles and scythes are basically the same function to cut down grain in harvesting. This is the way that people used to harvest their oats and hay. In the aspect of the reaper or harvester, this is the spirit of death cutting down humans to harvest the souls. Sickles and sythes differ only in length one has a long shaft the other a short handle. I think its a sythe he holds.

Because he is a reaper and those are the tools of the trade.
Seriously, though, Death is portrayed as a reaper to represent how he "harvests" people, by cutting them away from life and taking them to some other use. I once saw a tarot card the showed Death swinging his scythe in a field of hands and feet that I thought represented the concept well.

a sickle is a type of scythe.
Death carries this as a reminder that he cuts life short like a reeper in the field cuts off the stalk of wheat. It is a reference to the Biblical idea that people are like grain in the harvest, when they are ripe (i.e. it is time for them to die), they are harvested.

The Scythe is the tool ancients used to reap their crops. The Grim Reaper is the name given to the mythical being who cuts people down, in the same manner that crops are cut down.

He carries a scythe. A scythe is a tool used by ancient farmers during harvest, and death is parallel to harvest.

A scythe, which is the larger of the two. He carries it to harvest our souls and cut our roots, like the mortal grains of wheat that we are.

It's a scythe. As for why? I have no clue. Maybe he needs to harvest some grain in the afterlife.
