A very good example on why the electoral college system works better than a popular vote is in the 2000 elections. Yes, Gore got more popular vote and lost, but the recount is the issue I'm taking about. Elections are a STATE issue, and the recount was confined to Florida only. Even though it was a mess, think about how much worse it would have been if elections were a FEDERAL issue.

Also consider that the President is NOT elected to be the "voice of the people". That is the job of Congress (more specifically, the U.S. House of Representatives).

You really need to trust the founders on this one. It's a marvelous concept they've passed on to us. It insures that people in all areas are fairly represented.

One gentleman during a debate summed it up as follows:

"...As for those simpletons who refuse to see that the electoral college gives every American a voice, what makes you think that you should run my views into the ground without me being heard?

Abolish the electoral college and you do that very thing. Going to the popular vote would allow the larger communities to force their choice on the smaller populace. That's against our Constitution..."

Without the electoral college, California and New York would determine outcomes of votes for the whole country.

In addition to the population factor, without the electoral college the vote would often be swayed by what ever fad was in vogue at the time of the vote.

Because we as a nation of states, must have equal say in our national presidential election. States with higher population cannot and should not dictate the outcome of it. Candidates would spend all of their time in these states, and places with small populations would never get a choice. This was a brilliant idea by our founding fathers of our country and should be left alone.

This is an archaic practice put into the constitution because back then most people were illiterate and had no idea what was going on.

It needs to get amended.

has to do with human migration and peaceful living, among other reasons, it's the best, hard to explain without a chalk board and about a half a semester of good ole fashioned political science from a real American.

It was better when it was initiated but now it is just a formality because it is in the Constitution and we never took it out.
