I'm not sure there's a clear-cut Biblical position on capital punishment--I've searched and pondered it for several years myself, but the only conclusion I can find in the Bible is that regardless of whether our respective governments support or oppose capital punishment, eternity is a much, much longer-lasting issue that we need to prepare for. I've heard the argument put forth that by cutting someone's life short by execution, we are denying them further chances to accept Christ as their Lord and Savior--but would they use the extra time they might be given to choose Him or to choose themselves? A condemned inmate would have the "luxury" (if you call it that) of knowing when he or she would die, and all other things being equal, they would know what the deadline is for them to get right with God. Most people don't have the opportunity to know exactly when they will die. But again, the bigger issue isn't how long God gives each one of us to live, but what we do now to determine whether we will accept God's free gift of salvation and spend eternity with Him, or reject it and spend eternity separated from Him. If this life were all that there was, then I don't see how capital punishment could be justified, eye-for-an-eye, tooth-for-a-tooth notwithstanding. But as a Christian, I believe that we will exist for eternity and so the end of this life is just the beginning of eternity and not the end of the story.
Not that it really answers your question, but back in 2001, I purchased a billboard near the prison where Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh was executed, asking people to pray for him to turn to the Lord before he died. Check out the first link below.
