It's supposedly a faster way for entering words. The phone uses an algorithm to determine the most common word corresponding to the numbers you push. For example, if you type in 275, it will output the word "ask".

I think the whole T9word thing is extremely annoying and not a bit helpful. It actually slows down texting tremendously.

T9 is another term for dictionary or predictive text. It lets you type words quicker by guessing what word it is that you're attemping to text
