I have a compag presario 1800 and when I try to defrag it will not continue?

the computer keeps clicking like something is running but I can not figure out what is running or where it is running I am a computer idiot.....

As a rule, when a defrag won't continue past a certain point, it's because a running program interferes with it. The best way to run Defrag is to boot into "Safe Mode" first. You do this by starting up your pc and then keep tapping the F8 key. Eventually, instead of the regular Windows welcome screen, you'll see some choices, one of which will be "Safe Mode". Choose that, let the pc boot into safe mode, and then run the Defrag utility. It should complete all the way at that mode. Then just exit, reboot, and go back to the regular Windows boot mode. If the sound is coming from a speaker, you are having a software problem. You should find an alternative defragmenting program. If the sound is coming from inside your computer, but not from the internal speaker(if it has one), you are having a hardware issue. Because the main thing being accessed during defragging is the hard drive, this is where I would start. My last WD hard drive made a clicking noise occasionally. Then it made it more often. Then more. Until one day it failed and all it could do was click and arc electricity across onto my computer case to fry my other components. If it is a software thing, no problem. If it is a hardware thing, check it out before it gets too serious.

In my view ur hard drive jumper is installed incorrectly. Just correct it. U will get rid of ur problem.
