I love the idea of a chimera. It shows that anything we imagine which is outside of the scope of something real and known always has to be described in terms of a mixture of things we already know. There are many mythological beasts which fit this category ( like the griffon ). Head of an eagle, body of a lion, claws of a lizard, a horse with wings, a snake with a human face, there are so many different permutations. Just try to imagine some totally new creature, and it will certainly be a chimera of some kind. These beasts exist as the guradians at the very boundaries of our imaginations.
Of course, a chimera is only our limited way of describing these unknown creatures. Whatever they are the offspring of, they are their own creatures with their own proper way of being in the world, and our pitiful descriptions only serve to illustrate our lack of knowledge.
And now, at the dawn of the 21st century, with the genomes of so many creatures catalogued, the future looks as though it will be filled with chimeras. Scientists have already started combining genes of different animals and plants and come up with some truly remakable things. Rabbits that glow in the dark! I would like to get some biologists to find a way to combine human and animal genes to give me a talking dog. One day not far in the future anything will be possible.
But we must be careful. Look for an example at the crossbreed of a horse and a donkey; it makes a mule, and a mule is sterile. Any animal you can imagine will soon be possible, but it is most important for us to be aware of what is viable. Often chimeras must be unique, lonely creatures.
