I am sure you all have heard of neo pets. What programs are used to design that site and what kind of coding would you need to know?

Erhm, there is no single program that can be used to design a site. They could have used anything from notepad.exe to Dreamweaver.

I am not sure on the exact things that Neopet uses because I have not used it in years, but I can recall that the game are flash games which mean that they were created in Macromedia Flash using Actionscripting of some kind.

They probably use some kind of .cgi page (Common Gateway Interface). They may have moved to PHP and MySQL databases which are a lot simplier and more secure to use.

The easiest things to learn would be PHP, ActionScript, and SQL and of course have extensive knowledge of HTML [or how to use the webdevelopment program that you are using].

Neopets was advertising for programmers here where I live for quite some time, so I'm fairly confident about their technology mix, based on the skills they were looking for. The site itself is coded with the serverside language PHP. When they need to store data in a database, they used MySQL. This is a fairly standard combination, and is used on more internet websites than any other technology.

The mini-games are coded in flash. Again, no surprise there, as flash has been used for interactive web games for a long time now.
