You can determine the word count several ways:
1) File (menu) | Properties (menu item) | Statistics (tab)
2) Tools (menu) | Word Count (menu item)
3) Creating a toolbar, as above: View (menu) | Toolbars (menu item) | Word Count (menu item)

Then, you can just type this number yourself at the end of your essay.

OR, you could add a "Field" at the end of your essay and have Word do this automatically for you.

To do this:
1) Put the cursor where you want to have the Word Count to show up (perhaps after you type the words: "Essay Word Count is "
2) Then, Insert (menu) | Field... (menu item) Select "NumWords" from the list of "Field Names"
3) Hit OK...and there you go!

One caution: You may notice that the field does not change automatically if you add more words to your essay. However, if you simply click on the number and hit F9, it will immediately update! If you have more than one Field, you can hit Ctrl-A and then F9, and all of your Fields will automatically update!

Without even hitting F9, you can have Word automatically update all your Fields before you Print the document. To do this:
Tools (menu) | Options... (menu item) | Print (tab)
And check the box "Update fields" and hit OK.

Then, you can type to your hearts desire, the Field won't change, but then when you go to print, it will change to the correct number of words in your essay!

I hope this helps you!
