I had to "cheat" and cut & paste this answer because I'm not too good at remembering things and I fell asleep in some of my classes when I was supposed to be learning this, lol.

Well, it helped me out too because I did look it up for awhile tonight, so now I know. I don't know how long I'll retain it though, lol.

Economically, the United States is one of the world's most highly developed and productive nations. No other country equals the United States in the production of goods and services. Its people enjoy one of the world's highest standards of living.

There were two pretty significant reasons.

First, much of Europe suffered famines during the 19th Century. This led to diseases and helped fuel the political instability that left many people displaced.

The second reason was the political instability, which triggered several wars. Many people immigrated to escape political persecution.

My own grandparents and their families left Europe to seek a better life and due in large part to both of the first reasons.

My mother's family was Polish. My father's was German.

Irish came during the Irish Potato Famine (1845-1849) on what they called Coffin Ships. The potato's got a fungus and it ruined them all. They came looking for a better life. Wikipedia has some great stuff on this. I had to do an essay for my cultural diversity class last semester.
