Just bought a 98 Town and country minivan at an auction. Feels like the power steering isn't working at slow speeds(very hard to turn wheel), at faster speeds you can turn the wheel but its still harder than normal. What do you think this might be and what might it cost to fix?
Thanks for your ideas.

Either the steering rack, or the power steering pump is faulty.

Rack and pinion is going bad/leaking. Had same thing happen on a 2000 Caravan. Hard to steer at low speeds, easier at higher speeds but not quite right. Take to a garage for repairs, preferably a dealer, a little more expensive, but the job will be done right.

Sounds like your power steering pump is going bad. Have an honest mechanic check it out. Another possiblity is if it isnt rack and pinion then u may be able to adjust the steering gear. But on a 98 car chances are it has rack and pinion.

We think you should get off the computer, go to the van and take a look. If there is red fluid on the hose and your power steering fluid reservoir is low or empty, then it is a power steering hose. Otherwise, it may be a trans cooler line. Either way, take care of it soon, it could lead to a more expensive repair. Good luck.

check it has enough fluid. try flushing it if you can. a cheap repair manual from wal mart will have an explanation for your car. also make sure the belt is tigth enought to drive the pump. if that doesn't cure it the pump is shot change it if you can. if you can't you're better off driving it to a garage before you try anything. same with the belts. don't screw around with them if you're not sure about tightening them after. you'll need a helper while you put a lot of torque on there

It sounds like it is probably the ps rack, but do check the oil level.Sometimes when they detail the engines they overdue it with that oil they spray on the engine make sure the belt is dry.

Could be as simple as a loose pwr strg belt. or a bad pwr. strg.
pump. Make sure your tires have about 32psi in them and the
fluid level is up.
