i was wondering if i could mix water and fabric softner. or are there more things i need to add on to it?

Yes you can mix fabric softener with water and make your own febreez. You don`t have to add anything else....More water than fabric softener
I learned this on the web somewhere and can not remember the website.....I make this at home all the time....I spray it on my cloths in the morning before leaving the house....

I've made my own....with baking soda, a little pine sol (whatever smell you prefer) a couple of capfulls of alcohol and hot water to mix it up good. I think it works pretty well. Have also used carpet fresh ( the powdery stuuf) with baking soda in it and a little alcohol both do fine for me

i use fabric softener in a spray bottle and dilute it with water.
