Something sloppy like pizza or crab legs or BBQ
You can tell a lot about a person when faced with messy food. Do they dive in and enjoy and have fun. Are they worried about appearances. Do they get the least messiest thing on the menu?
When I dated I liked to have fun - I always told my kids to be themselves and have fun - All that romance and candle light and wine not for a first date. There is enough pressure on a first date and beside BBQ sauce on your face or butter on your hands can have a certain romance.

cute question. i say order whatever you feel like eating. but please don't order a salad! way too cliche' :)
personally, i just try to stay away from stringy foods b/c i have a slight over bite. then they have to see me struggling trying to bite it off. lol. so i usually stick to the "cut and eat" foods...steak, chicken, veal (ok, maybe not veal :) but when my Invisalign kicks in, I will not care about that stuff anymore either. I say be comfortable and eat what you like. If you are comfortable, then everything else should fall in place. More than a dish, I suggest going to a place that you KNOW that you like the food. That way you don't have to deal with the awkwardness of suffering through a distasteful meal.

I usually take them out to pizza. It's better than fast food and not as formal as a sit down restaurant.

Chinese food (small portions, usually bite size), No pasta (too difficult to eat in front of others), Steak houses are always good because you can cut the food to your bite size pieces.

Anything that isn't smelly or going to get stuck in your teeth. You don't want to smell like garlic or have a huge piece of spinach stuck by your tooth.

I've never heard of any rules, but I'd guess something that won't make your breath stink (i.e., garlic and onions) or cause you to have gas (i.e., fiber-rich foods and foods with beans).

if the choice is up to you, eat at one of your favorite restaurants, or maybe make one of your best dishes. i would stay away from really messy or saucy foods though because you run the risk of spills:)
