i just put $776 into my neon for a new feul pump and EGR. literally just got it back thursday night, and tonight when i was picking up the kids it acting like it wasn't going to start so i pushed the gas pedal and it started but was shaky. i made it home fine but everytime i got to a stop light it would idle so rough i was afraid it would stall. what is going on here? it's not getting enough fuel to run right but i just got a new pump in, there's almost a full tank of gas, and the engine light isn't on. would fuel injector/carb cleaner that you put in the gas tank help??

i'll definately be calling the repair shop in the morning. does it seem like something they should be repairing at their cost or mine?

Just a thought from being in the car industry: Neon is not a reliable long-lasting car.

There are several things that can create this symptom. First you need to look at the RPM of the engine. If it is lower then normal and the engine smooths out when you use the gas pedal to bring the engine to normal idle then you may have a sticking Idle air control motor (AIC). If it is still idling ruff at the normal idle speed then the EGR valve may be partially open. Seance you just had it worked on I would take it back and demand answers. Be careful some times they will try and sell you more work when they are the ones that made the mistake. This is more common when the costumer is female.

Sounds like too much fuel or not enough air..Pushing the gas pedal to the floor is called clear flood mode...Did a shop do the work? You might take it back to have them look at it. What was the original complaint? Did they perform a fuel induction service? There might be carbon holding the egr open, causing rough idle and stalling....

trade it, get a Honda or Toyota or Subaru, looks like you bought $350.00 worth of parts and $400.00 labor and you didn't need 1 of those parts and it isn't fixed yet, I drive Subaru's because of their reliability and the AWD, have owned perhaps 5 or 6 over 25 years, only 1 bought new, problems like those you have with the neon are poor part manufacture and/or just bad design, your fuel pump was in the tank which is why labor was so much. Putting the pump in the tank is an obsolete practice. The cars I mentioned all have external electric pumps, cheaper and easy to replace. However fuel pump failure in these cars is not a problem anyway. Sorry for going on so.

what you might try is to disconnect the negative on the battery for about 10 minutes, then reinstall it, this will reset the computer. It may stall the first time you try to start it, but should start up the second time. This will cause the computer to learn a whole new set of parameters and may bump up your idle or fuel flow to keep it from stalling.
It could have retained the old memory and has not adapted to your new parts.

I am inclined to agree with MIKE C that mentioned a stuck egr valve, even though it,s new does not mean that it works properly, also try to look for any loose vacumm hoses that are loose, since this may cause the engine to run rough without sending a signal to the computer to turn on the check engine light.

I would call the shop you originally took it too and tell them what is happening. I could be something simple like a connector came loose or another problem all together. Either way they will know what they did and didn't do already and can diagnose the problem more quickly. Chances are its another problem altogether, common occurence when fixing vehicles. Usually there is more than one problem and only one gets diagnosed and fixed then the second problem pops up. Or in another common occurence is something called "snowballing", were you fix one problem after another continually.

the early neons have been a reliability disaster. no telling, a clear out on the coolant? what you describe certainly feels like a chilly air intake which replaced your air clear out. on autos with complication with the coolant device having subject concerns, this would make a vehicle run warm because it burns purifier and hence warmer. there are truly 2 thoughts. a million. positioned the old clear out device back on. 2. positioned an after industry exhaust on. those pull the air our quicker, hence lowering the warmth and counteract the impression of the air intake for warmth. mixed they could advance your HP and probably you gas economic device besides.
