What do you mean by "work"? Ethanol is a flamable liquid (ethyl alcohol) that will burn in an engine like gasoline does. It doesn't get as many miles to the gallon and there are some modifications needed to allow an engine to burn it instead and many new vehicles are configured to burn either one.

Ethanol is the alcohol found in beer, wine, and liquor. When you drink a beverage containing ethanol it enters the blood stream more quickly than food. It acts a depressant on the nervous system. In small amounts it only depresses the centers in the brain that control behavior so one may become less inhibited. In larger amounts it causes unconsciousness, and in still larger amounts it can suppress breathing and the heartbeat and cause death.

Ethanol gets into your bloodstream and prevents your synapses from completing their work. You feel drunk. Sources? I read it somewhere.
