They don't do hourly, most of them have a salary and they have to put in at least 40 hours a week. Even if they go over they don't get overtime. But most of them have a large amount of benefits such as insurance, 401K, stock options and they make incentive if the store they work at makes their monthly goals in sales and other things; like opening store credit cards and good customer service. Most of them make up to mid 5 digits a year, plus the incentives. However the job is high stress and high maintance. So you would be dealing with and delegating a lot of people and having irregular work hours.
Good Luck

Most assistant retail managers do not make an hourly wage, but are instead paid salary/commission and it varies.

Depends on the type of retail. If you are talking low end retail like WalMart, then about $10 per hour. Some higher end places earn between $15-25 per hour, but generally those are career managers who make that.

I think part of it might be influenced by the cost of living in the area you're in. I live in the Silicon Valley region of Northern California (the South Bay Area). The cost of living here is one of the HIGHEST in the entire country -- so high it's sickening and depressing at the same time. :( You can't even buy a halfway decent townhouse or condo for less than $500,000, so you can imagine how much it costs to buy a single-family detached home!! INSANE.

And so, I suspect the wages of certain types of jobs here, are higher than the "national average." Of course, I don't know this as a fact, but it just seems that's what I've heard around. Sorry this answer wasn't much help. Good luck with your job, tho! :)
