You're trying to find the distance using the formula d=r*t

d=distance
r=rate (how fast)
t=time

The distance is unknown
d= ?
r= it was traveling 55 mi/h
t = 8 hours

So...

d=55*8
d= 440

d=distance r= rate; t= time;
d=r*t is the same as
d=55 miles* 8hrs.
d=440miles is the DISTANCE
the object traveled the distance of 440 miles in 8 hours

D = DISTANCE
R = RATE
T = TIME
THEREFORE
D=RT WHICH MEANS DISTANCE = RATE X TIME
D = 55 X 8
D = 440KMS
