he somewhat blinded him temporaily by a polished sheild he took with him into battle, stunned him by a very accurate rock pebble from his sling( which he used very successfully on many occassions to scare wolves and lions away from his tended flocks as a shepard) and before goliath could recover his senses, david raced forward and cut off goliath head with a sword given to him from saul the king!!this whole combat was one where both sides had agreed to abide by the judgement of the gods in a trial by combat of only two individuals to decide the fate of a battle ..sparing the other warriors and their families the loss of their loved ones and men much needed to harvast the grain and tend the flocks and gather food in a somewhat harsh and trying environment!!armies at the time were not generally professional and were drawn from levies of the populous in times of dire need!!!so individual champions fighting was considered a very civiled way to decide any dispute between factions over many quewstions!!

David defeated Goliath with one smooth stone. He threw the stone in a sling and Goliath hit the ground. David then took Goliath's sword and beheaded him with it. David then took his head and showed everyone.
