If you have a 40 gb drive and 512mb of memory, you should be able to perform the install ok. While MS says it will run with less, you will not be happy with the performance at all. A clean XP install will be much better than trying to upgrade but you will need to save all your data files first.

Primarily, you can retain Windows 98 and install XP, creating a dual boot OS. It's usually safer to have this since you have the secondary OS to back you up, in case of emergency.
Installing XP on an old computer, however, is not advisable.
First of all, XP runs better on 64 bit technology while the old technologies were 16 and 32 bit.
Windows XP needs 512 MB RAM and a minimum of 10 GB HDD space to run efficiently.
If you're going to be playing Games with graphics in them, them just double the space requirements.
Since you don't seem to know enough to attend to this, I'd suggest that you get professional help.
Either way, you'll need to buy the Windows XP installation CD, so, you might as well ask the professional there to do it for you and teach you how it's done.
All the best.

download this program called Belarc Advisor, it tells you everything you have on your computer. It's small and easy to use.
If your friend tried to put Windows XP and Me on the same computer then that was a mistake. Why would you want two operating systems on one computer anyways.
There are known issues when trying to upgrade Windows Me to Windows XP, I would not recommend that.
If you are upgrading from Windows 98, you will be fine. Yes, Windows 98 will erase. XP will start installing the minute you pop the CD in. Just follow the steps and you'll be fine. It's very easy.

Expect to pay around $100 for a legitimate XP disk. After running Belarc, consider what you have in your computer; what will it cost to bring the system up to accetable performance to run Windows XP (256 MB memory, a 20 GB hard drive, a 450 MHz processor--and these are just the reasonable minimum requirements for XP). But the biggest question you need to ask yourself: "What do I need to do what I want to do with a computer?"
Weight this against the cost of a new machine.
Now you have some data with which to make an intelligent decision.
Oh, and Yes you can partition a hard drive and install the 98 OS on one partition and the XP operating system on another (or even on a second hard drive.

First and foremost, Microsoft provides no more support for windows 95, 98 and ME. So, before you do anything, go to windows updates and search in there to find upgrading to windows XP. (Home or Professional) Microsoft has a free program/service that checks you system and tells you what and if it can be done. However, It seems to me that your machine is too old and it would not be possible and/or advisable to upgrade to windows XP. Also, upgrading an old machine to accept WinXP, It will cost much more to upgrade it than to get a new machine. So, my advise to you is to get a new machine for no less than $800.00 to $1000.0 and you will save money and headaches. Then, transfer you files from the old machine to the new, either by getting a program that does it or by copying what you want on Cd's and transferring them to your new machine. Today, you could get a machines with less than $500.00 but, depending what you want to do with your machine, you must be real careful what you get. Especially now with the holiday coming up that they will get out all the obsolete machines they have in stock and sell them for nothing. You must know what you are getting and for what!
Good luck.

confident, improve to a minimum of 2Gb, the recent prevalent. bypass to the dell web site and to confirm what style you prefer. ought to be everywhere from $20-40. this could heavily boost your computers overall performance. computers are starting to be extra low priced, and you gets an honest twin middle processor for $500 and a minimum of 2Gb's of ram and an extremely roomy 200Gb difficultcontinual. in case you prefer to make that bounce. you probably can not improve the pictures card in that laptop on the grounds that PCI show did not extremely come on that many computers lower back then, so in case you improve the entire laptop and then improve the pictures card for a a ways extra suitable laptop than the only you have genuine now.

Right click your C drive, and it will show you how much hard drive space you have left free and how much you have used. I would not even consider XP unless you have a 1.2 GB processor 1024 MB of RAM and a 20GB Hard drive, but that is just my preference. You could get away with less.
