actually, some say you shouldnt use vaseline because it doesn't promote healing and actually pulls the color from the skin.

(this is all copied & pasted from bottom link)
Allowing Tattoos to dry prolongs the healing time, producing a dry scab and loss of ink.

Clinical studies have demonstrated that wounds moistened with ointment heal faster, produce less dry scabbing and consequently keeps more Tattoo ink in the skin which heal brighter and sharper looking.

Coat with Vaseline ONLY during showers so as not to allow Tattoo to get soaking wet. Wipe off after shower. It is true that Petroleum jelly or any petroleum based products tend to drain the color from a Tattoo.

You should not ever put vaseline on tattoos EVER. I have many tattoos and have tried many different methods of caring for them. You want to wash it about twice a day with a non-fragrence anti-bacterial soap and you need to put non scented lotion on it about 4 times a day. I use curelle, lubriderm is fine too. Vaseline smothers your tattoo and doesn't allow it to breathe. Do not pick scabs or that might ruin your tattoo. If it starts to itch, use more lotion. You need it to keep the tattoo from drying out. Do this for about 2 weeks then it will be back to normal.

Don't completely submerge your tattoos in water for the two week healing period, splash water on it to wash it and do not rub dry with a towel, use a paper towel and dab it dry.

eww..don't use Vaseline. Use a triple antibiotic like Bacitracin. It's to keep the tat moisturized...but the bacitracin will keep infection at bay. Think lots of tiny wounds.

Only use Vaseline if you don't have neo-sporin/bactracin or any other antibiotic cream. It's so when the tat starts healing it doesn't dry out and peel. If it peels you lose color and/or definition.
