The French Hugunaughts were French Mercenaries for hire, just in it for the profit.
However France as a Country had just about the same feeling for the Crown of England as we did at the time.
I guess seeing that they themselves would probably be up against King George themselves eventually, they opted wisely to band with us giving them a better chance of success.
Of course this was back when there were still men in France.

Probably the major reason they wanted to help us during the revolution was to make things as difficult as possible for Great Britain.

Ignore the dollar amount. Look at the fact they supplied over 75% of the gunpowder and ammunition the colonists used. It might have been important... ...that and the fact the British were fighting four other wars around the world at the same time that were more important to them.

Because Britain was an enemy of France and helping the US
was a way of weakening Britain..
